Rio can feel overwhelming, so here is the plan I give friends: one area per day, the famous spots at the right time and a few places most visitors miss.
Days 1 and 2: the beaches
Copacabana at sunrise, Ipanema at sunset. Watching the sun go down from Arpoador is a local ritual, so join it.
Day 3: the viewpoints
Go up early, before the crowds and the haze. The light is soft and the city is quiet.
Days 4 and 5: the neighborhoods
Santa Teresa for colorful streets and Lapa for music at night. Walk slowly and look up.
Days 6 and 7: nature
A rainforest hike inside the city, then a day trip to a quieter beach outside it.
Tip
Golden hour in Rio is short. Be in place 30 minutes before sunset, not at sunset.
