Most unfinished beats die in the loop stage. Here is the 20-minute order I use so I always end up with something I can build on.
Minutes 1 to 5: drums
Kick, snare, hats. Keep it simple and make it groove. If you're not nodding your head, keep tweaking.
Minutes 6 to 10: bass
Follow the kick. The bass and the kick should feel like one instrument.
Minutes 11 to 15: chords
Four chords, one sound. Pick a warm keys or pad sound and stop browsing presets.
Minutes 16 to 20: one hook
A melody, a vocal chop or a texture that makes the loop yours. Then save it, name it and walk away.
Tip
Come back the next day. Fresh ears decide what the track needs next.
