If budgeting has ever felt like a punishment, start here. The 50/30/20 split is not a rule. It's a starting point you can set up in two minutes.

50% for needs

Rent, groceries, transport, insurance and minimum debt payments. The things you would still pay if your income stopped tomorrow.

30% for wants

Eating out, hobbies, subscriptions and travel. This is the part that makes a budget something you can actually live with.

20% for savings and debt

Your emergency fund first, then extra debt payments, then long-term saving. Automate it on payday so you never see the money.

When the numbers don't fit

  • High rent? Start with 60/20/20 and work toward 50/30/20 over time

  • Paying off expensive debt? Move part of your wants into the 20 for a while

  • Irregular income? Budget from your lowest month, not your best one
